You will need this permit if you own or operate a heavy vehicle and intend to be exempt from certain vehicle standards compliance requirements. A heavy vehicle is a vehicle with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) or an aggregate trailer mass (ATM) of more than 4.5 tonnes.
This permit will be issued if:
- vehicle standards would prevent the heavy vehicle from operating for the purpose for which it was built
- the heavy vehicle is an experimental, prototype or similar vehicle that cannot be reasonably expected to comply with vehicle standards
- the heavy vehicle does not need to comply with similar vehicle standards prior to the commencement of the national law.
This exemption permit may apply to one or more heavy vehicles.
