Water licence - Queensland

Description

You will need this licence if you intend to take or interfere with water in a watercourse, lake or spring for purposes such as:

  • stock or domestic use on lands that do not adjoin a watercourse, lake or spring
  • irrigation
  • industrial or commercial use
  • storing water behind a weir
  • impounding water behind a storage structure
  • storing water in excavations that are within or connected to a watercourse.

You may need a water licence for taking or interfering with surface water, overland flow water or underground water.

Transfer process

Transfer

If you are the licensee and cease being owner of the land, you may apply to transfer the licence to the person who will be the owner of the land. However, if you do not apply to transfer the licence, the licence transfers by default to the registered owner of the land immediately once you cease to be the owner.

Application on the approved form or ensuring registration of the land sale occurs in the Automated Title System.

You can transfer this licence by applying in writing on the approved form to your nearest departmental office at the address given on the department website.
