Marine park activity permit - Queensland

Description

You may need this permit to carry out activities in Queensland marine parks.

Marine parks established over tidal lands and waters protect and conserve the values of the natural marine environment while allowing for its sustainable use. They protect habitats including mangrove wetlands, seagrass beds, mudflats, sandbanks, beaches, rocky outcrops and fringing reefs.

The three state marine parks in Queensland are:

  • Great Barrier Reef Coast Marine Park
  • Great Sandy Marine Park
  • Moreton Bay Marine Park.

Activities you may need a permit for include:

  • tourism programs
  • vessel charter
  • commercial whale watching
  • educational programs
  • research
  • collecting marine plants or animals
  • media activities
  • flying an aircraft
  • operating a hovercraft or hydrofoil
  • anchoring and mooring for an extended period
  • works - construction, installation, operation, repairs
  • traditional hunting.

If you are going to undertake commercial activities within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, this permit will be issued jointly with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this permit, you must have the following insurance:

  • workers compensation insurance or equivalent
  • public liability insurance for $20 million
  • any other activity-specific insurance and indemnity requirements.

Transfer process

Transfer

Marine park permits may be transferred. An online application form must be submitted by the proposed transferee. A letter or email from the current permit holder stating their intention to transfer or sell the permit, and the proposed transferee stating their intention to receive or purchase it, must also be submitted. The transferee must be a suitable person to hold a permit.
