Registration of persons using animals for scientific purposes - Queensland


This registration is required by any person who intends to use an animal for a scientific purpose or allow an animal to be used for a scientific purpose in Queensland.

A person who commissions or funds animal use for a scientific purpose in Queensland and who is not involved in the 'hands on' work must only be registered if they retain a person who is not registered.

A person who undertakes 'hands on' work with animals for scientific purposes in Queensland must register with Biosecurity Queensland.

Service type


A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.


The registration is for a period of three (3) years from date of registration approval.

Application process

Apply for this registration by submitting an Application for registration as a scientific user to Biosecurity Queensland. You must include the following items with your completed application:

  • the application fee
  • new applications require a certified copy of proof of identity (individuals) or current Certificate of Incorporation or similar document (other applicants)
  • nominated Animal Ethics Committee.

Application processing and approval

Your application for registration is decided within 28 days of receiving all the necessary information.  An application may be:

  • approved and the person registered
  • approved and the person registered subject to registration conditions
  • not approved pending the provision of further documents or information
  • refused on the basis that the Chief Executive of the Department is not satisfied that the applicant, or any animal ethics committee nominated by the applicant, will comply with the Scientific Use Code.


This registration cannot be transferred.
