Animal Welfare Research and Teaching Licence - South Australia

Description

You will need this licence if you intend to use animals for research or teaching. You will be authorised under this licence to use fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, or birds for research or teaching purposes when use of the animal is essential to:

  • understand human and / or animal biology
  • maintain or improve human and / or animal health and welfare
  • improve animal management or production
  • achieve educational objectives
  • environmental study.

Your research and teaching project will need to be considered and approved by an animal ethics committee (nominated on your licence). An animal ethics committee is responsible for ensuring all research and teaching using animals is conducted in compliance with the relevant code of practice.

A separate approval is required if your research or teaching involves protected wildlife.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an animal welfare research and teaching licence, you will need to:

  • have appropriate premises and facilities for the care and handling of animals
  • have adequate arrangements for the veterinary care of animals
  • have your project approved by an animal ethics committee.

You may nominate an existing animal ethics committee or establish your own. An animal ethics committee must consist of at least 5 people appointed to each of the following categories:

  • a person with qualifications and experience in veterinary science
  • a person with recent experience in the use of animals in scientific or teaching activities
  • a person who is experienced in animal welfare and not otherwise associated with the institution undertaking research or teaching
  • a person who is responsible for the routine care of animals from within the institution undertaking research or teaching
  • a person who has never been involved in the use of animals in scientific or teaching activities and who is not associated with the institution undertaking research or teaching.

You may apply for this licence on your own behalf or on behalf of a company.

You will need to submit a written proposal to your nominated animal ethics committee for consideration in addition to your application to the agency.

Lodge

You will need to lodge your completed application with fee payment with the agency at least 28 days before the proposed start date of your project.
