You will need this licence if you intend to use animals for research or teaching. You will be authorised under this licence to use fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, or birds for research or teaching purposes when use of the animal is essential to:
- understand human and / or animal biology
- maintain or improve human and / or animal health and welfare
- improve animal management or production
- achieve educational objectives
- environmental study.
Your research and teaching project will need to be considered and approved by an animal ethics committee (nominated on your licence). An animal ethics committee is responsible for ensuring all research and teaching using animals is conducted in compliance with the relevant code of practice.
A separate approval is required if your research or teaching involves protected wildlife.
