Beekeeper Registration - South Australia


Persons intending to keep bees or hives must be registered.

Bees must be kept in a removable frame hive. Apiarists must not expose to the open air, or any place that bees may have access to, any frames, combs, apiary products or appliances. Sufficient clean water of suitable mineral content must be also available within 200 metres of the hives.

All hives must be marked with the brand allocated by the Chief Inspector of Stock in the prescribed way.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.


Registration as a beekeeper is for a term expiring on the last day of February each year. An application for renewal must be made prior to this to avoid a lapse of registration.


2020-2021 fees:
Registration fee: $45.75
Hive contribution $1 per hive
No fee is payable if less than five hives or the bees are kept for the purposes of instruction in an educational institution approved by the Chief Inspector.

Additional information

New beekeepers registering during the period July 1 2020 - June 30 2021 must complete a registration and hive identification code form.
