The Code of Practice for vessel and facility management (marine and inland waters) was developed to assist owners and users of vessels to satisfy the requirements of the Environment Protection (Water Quality) Policy 2003.
Use of the guidelines outlined in the Code should enable owners or users of vessels to satisfy the general environmental duty as described in the Environment Protection Act, and protect inland waters for the wider benefit of the community.
The principal objective of the Code is to ensure that owners or users of a vessel on inland waters do not pollute the environment, and take all reasonable and practicable measures to prevent or minimise any environmental harm. This means that any pollutant, including fuel, sewage, untreated greywater, galley waste and garbage from vessels, must not be discharged into, or onto the banks of, any inland waters. This includes macerated and chemically or biologically treated waste.
