In South Australia, employees are entitled to portable long service leave if they perform building, electrical or metal trades work predominantly on site including work on new or existing commercial, industrial or domestic buildings or structures.
This means employees don't have to work with the same employer for 10 years to be eligible for long service leave.
Employers of eligible workers are required by law to register with Portable Long Service Leave within one month of employing, lodge Employer Returns and pay a levy based on 2% of remuneration (excluding apprentices who are levy free) every 2 months.
Portable Long Service Leave keep a record of each employee's service and pay them when they become entitled to long service leave at no further cost to the employer.
There is also a voluntary scheme for Working Directors and self-employed contractors.
