Emu Farming Permit - South Australia

Description

You will require a permit if you intend to conduct emu farming. Emu farming includes:

  • the incubation of eggs
  • breeding of emus for commercial purposes
  • providing emus for sale or slaughter.

This permit will enable you to:

  • take an emu or the eggs of an emu from the wild
  • slaughter or destroy by other means an emu in captivity
  • possess or control an emu or the eggs of an emu
  • sell an emu or the carcass or eggs of an emu.

Applicants must comply with the code of management for farming, have specified fencing and be a member of an approved association.

Licence

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

You will need to provide details of and meet criteria relating to the nature of your farming operations, boundary fencing, and emu handling facilities.

You will need to demonstrate an understanding of emu care, handling and farming requirements.

An inspection is required of each site prior to approval of a permit.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

You must maintain a protected animal's record book and submit an annual fauna stock return 14 days after the expiry of your permit.

You must submit a report within 14 days after taking an emu or the eggs of an emu from the wild, stating the number of emus and eggs taken.
