You will need this licence if you intend to carry out exploratory operations for petroleum, geothermal, gas storage and regulated substance resources, and operations to establish the nature and extent of a discovery and the feasibility of production.
There are four categories of exploration licence:
- petroleum exploration licence (PEL)
- geothermal exploration licence (GEL)
- gas storage exploration licence (GSEL)
- regulated substance exploration licence (RSEL).
An exploration licence may be granted for one or more separate areas however, the total licence area cannot exceed:
- 10,000 km2 in the case of a petroleum exploration or regulated substance licence;
- 3,000 km2 in the case of a geothermal exploration licence;
- 2,500 km2 in the case of a gas storage exploration licence.
Separate applications and licences are required for the four categories of exploration licence. Certain licences are compatible with other licences. Please contact the agency for more information.
