This registration is required by any person who processes, purchases or obtains fish (eg scalefish and associated species such as abalone, rock lobster, prawns, scallops, ornamental shell, seaweed etc) for retail or wholesale purposes unless the purchases are made through a registered fish processor. Processing is scaling, gilling, gutting, filleting, freezing, chilling, packing or any other activity involved in preparing fish for sale.
Persons who purchase fish from a registered fish processor do not need to be registered as a fish processor but must still maintain records of fish purchases (eg restaurants or fish and chip shops). Registered fish processors are required to maintain a book of records and provide monthly statistical returns. Details of the records to be kept and the manner in which they are to be kept, can be obtained from the agency.
Commercial Fishery Licence holders who sell their catch to persons who do not hold a Fish Processor Registration may register as a processor and pay a concessional fee. If licence holders wish to purchase fish from other sources for resale they must pay the full registration fee.
