Heavy Vehicle Permit - South Australia


Persons wishing to operate a vehicle that is to exceed the statutory mass and/or dimension limits require a permit.

The limits are:

  • Mass - 42.5 tonnes
  • Width - 2.5 metres
  • Height - 4.3 metres


  • Rigid Truck - 12.5 metres
  • Rigid Bus - 12.5 metres
  • Articulated Bus - 18.0 metres
  • Articulated Vehicles - 19.0 metres
  • Rigid Truck and Trailer Combinations - 19.0 metres

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To apply for a heavy vehicle permit you must hold a current drivers licence and meet the minimum driving experience requirement for your desired licence class. The minimum experience required is:

  • 75 hours of supervises day driving in a heavy vehicle 
  • 15 hours of supervises night time driving in a heavy vehicle 
If you do not meet these requirements you can apply for a learners permit. 


Variable, 1 day to a maximum of 1 year depending on permit type, dimensions and weight.
