Investigation Agents Licence - South Australia


You will need this licence if you intend to carry on business as an investigation agent or work as an employee of an investigation agent.

You are considered to be acting as an investigation agent if you perform collection work or inquiry work for fee or reward. This may include:

  • tracking or repossessing goods
  • seizing goods to recover money
  • requesting or collecting debt payments
  • searching for missing persons
  • obtaining information about a person's character, actions or work without the written consent of that person
  • carrying out legal process for the enforcement of a court order
  • obtaining evidence to be used in legal proceedings.

Eligibility requirements

You may apply for this licence as a sole trader, partnership, company or employee.

To be eligible for this licence you will need to have:

  • the relevant qualifications or apply for a restricted licence to work with a licensed business partner if you do not have all the qualifications (details can be found in the attached documents and on the agency website)
  • at least $10,000 in net assets to apply for this licence.
  • a National Police Certificate no more than 1 year old, unless you are exempt (details can be found on the agency website).

This licence cannot be transferred.

Additional information

You will not be able to apply for this licence if:

  • you have legal restrictions on your work such as bankruptcy, financial receivership, suspended or disqualified trade licence
  • you have been a director of a company wound up to pay creditors in the past five years, including if you were a director six months prior to the winding up
  • you or a director of the company has been convicted of a serious offence of dishonesty or a summary offence of dishonesty in the past ten years.

You will not need this licence if you intend to work as a process server serving court documents.
