Motor Driving Instructors Licence - South Australia


Any person who intends to work as a driving instructor must obtain a licence to do so. Applicants must have undertaken appropriate training and meet certain conditions. Transport SA has accredited a number of private training providers.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for a motor driving instructors licence you must:

  • have held a driver's licence for at least four years
  • have held an unconditional driver's licence for a continuous period of not less than two years preceding the date of your application (minimum age 21 years)
  • not have been disqualified from holding a driver's licence in the preceding two years
  • completed Certificate of Fitness
  • national Police Clearance Certificate
  • two written character references
  • proof of identity.

Application process


You will be required to fill out the application form and lodge it at a Service SA customer service centre with the supporting documents.

Additional information

When submitting your application you will need to provide the following:

  • a resume with employment references
  • a current national police check
  • a medical and eyesight certificate 
  • proof of identity
  • a certified copy of a current certificate IV in Transport Logistics
  • evidence of successfully passing the road rules theory test for MDI's.

Disqualified persons or entities

Your application is unlikely to be accepted if you have:

  • been convicted of any sexual, fraud, financial, violent, drug related or theft offences
  • a history of driving offences or licence disqualifications / suspensions.
