Working with Children Check - South Australia

Description

You will need a Working with Children Check if you work or volunteer in a role which involves contact with children. A Working with Children Check is an assessment of whether you pose an unacceptable risk to children and whether you are, or are not, prohibited from working with children.

You will be authorised to undertake child-related work if you receive clearance from a Working with Children Check. Child-related work includes:

  • childcare or child-minding services
  • education, tuition or coaching services for children
  • clubs and associations involving children
  • accommodation or residential services for children
  • commercial services provided directly to children (such as photography, entertainment services or performances, and competitions)
  • transport services for children
  • disability services for children
  • health services for children
  • justice and detention services for children
  • emergency services.

Eligibility requirements

If you intend to work with children while your application is being processed, you must meet the following requirements:

  • you have submitted a valid Working with Children Check application
  • you have not been prohibited from working with children in South Australia or interstate
  • you have not been charged with, or found guilty of, a prescribed or presumptive disqualification offence (a serious offence)
  • you are being supervised at work by a person with a valid Working with Children Check.

Application process

During the check process, the agency will assess:

  • your national criminal history record
  • any disclosable court outcomes, such as charges, convictions, and court appearances
  • child protection information.

Individuals may apply for their own check, or an organisation may apply for a check on behalf of an individual. An organisation must register with the agency before applying for checks on behalf of individuals.

The Working with Children Check replaced the South Australian child-related employment screening check. If you have an employment screening check, it will remain valid until it expires. After this, you will need to apply for a Working with Children Check.

All employment screening checks will have expired by 1 July 2022.

If you have applied for a Working with Children Check, you may be permitted to work with children while your application is being processed.
