Permit to Keep and Sell Protected Animals (Scientific/Biological Products) - South Australia


You will require this permit if you want to keep, sell (or give) and use for scientific purposes, or for the production of biological products, protected animals of any class of species. This may include, for instance, the extraction of snake venom.

This permit is required even if the products are intended for commercial gain.

You may breed protected animals that are being kept under this permit. Unless an animal has been bred by you, it must be held in your possession for 6 months prior to selling or giving.

You will be entitled under this permit to access animal products for scientific or biological purposes other than for carrying out scientific research. You will need a separate permit if you want to undertake scientific research.

You will also need a separate permit if you intend to take a native animal from the wild.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

You must demonstrate experience in the handling of animals to which the permit relates and an understanding of the species specific requirements of holding and caring for such animals.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

You must maintain a protected animal's record book and submit an annual fauna stock return 14 days after the expiry of your permit.

Application process


You must complete the application form and submit it, along with 2 written references in support of your application, to the agency. A site inspection will be undertaken by the Department as part of the application process.


Permits are not transferable.

Additional information

You must include in your application 2 written references to attest to your skill and ability in relation to the species to which the permit relates.

Separate criteria must be met by those intending to access venomous snakes.
