You will require this permit if you want to keep, sell and use protected animals for scientific purposes or for the production of biological products, whether or not the products are intended for commercial gain. This may include, for example, extracting snake venom.
A protected animal includes any species of mammal, bird or reptile which is:
- indigenous to Australia
- migratory and occasionally migrates to, and lives in, Australia
- specified as a protected species in the legislation.
You will be authorised under this permit to access animal products for scientific or biological purposes other than for carrying out scientific research. You will need a separate permit if you want to undertake scientific research.
You will be authorised to breed protected animals that are being kept under this permit. You will need to keep any animal not bred by you for 6 months before selling or giving the animal.
You will need a separate permit if you intend to take a native animal from the wild.
