You will need this licence if you intend to cultivate alkaloid poppies for therapeutic use or research purposes. Alkaloid poppies contain opiates such as morphine, codeine and thebaine used for pain relief and other medications.
This licence authorises you to:
- cultivate or possess alkaloid poppies
- sell or supply poppy straw to a licensed processor at specified premises (commercial licence)
- supply alkaloid poppies or poppy straw to a licensed processor (research licence)
- conduct measurements, analyses and extractions, including extractions of alkaloids from poppies, for chemical analyses at specified premises (research licence).
Growers interested in cultivating poppies should first contact the processor licensed in South Australia to register their interest.
