You will need this permit if you intend to rescue protected animals from the wild for the purpose of short term rehabilitation and release. A protected animal includes any species of mammal, bird or reptile which is:
- native to Australia
- migratory and occasionally migrates to, and lives in, Australia
- specified as a protected species in the legislation.
This permit allows you to rescue injured, sick or orphaned animals.
You will not require this permit if you are already the holder of a wildlife carer permit or wildlife rehabilitation facility permit for the species you intend to rescue.
You will require a separate permit to keep a protected animal deemed unfit for release.
