Retain Protected Animals Unfit for Release Permit - South Australia


You will require a permit if you intend to keep rescued protected animals that are unfit for release into the wild.

This permit allows you to keep either:

  • two or more protected animals of a basic species (listed in the legislation)
  • protected animals of a specialist species (unlisted) which may be potentially difficult to keep, threatened or rare.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

You must demonstrate an understanding of the requirements of keeping and caring for the species to which the permit relates, including photos of the facilities where animals are intended to be kept.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

You must maintain a protected animal's record book and submit an annual fauna stock return 14 days after the expiry of your permit.
