Single-Use Plastics Ban - South Australia


You must not sell, supply or distribute the following prohibited plastic products in the course of carrying out your business:

  • single-use plastic drinking straws
  • single-use plastic cutlery
  • single-use plastic beverage stirrers.

From 1 March 2022, the following plastic products will also become prohibited:

  • expanded polystyrene cups, bowls, plates or clamshell containers
  • oxo-degradable plastic products.

Oxo-degradable plastic products have additives which accelerate the fragmentation of the material into smaller pieces or microplastics.

Exceptions to this ban comprise:

  • selling, supplying or distributing single-use plastic straws to people with a disability or medical reason
  • pre-packaged and attached prohibited plastic products, such as single-use plastic straws attached to juice or milk boxes to be excluded from the list of prohibited items
  • single-use plastic spoons to be used in medical or dental facilities and care facilities for clinical purposes until 1 March 2022.
