You will need this licence If you intend to undertake exploratory operations in relation to petroleum and certain other natural resources in South Australia. A speculative survey licence enables the licensee to undertake specific exploratory operations of the kind specified in the licence in the licence area. The total area of the speculative survey licence cannot exceed 10 000 km2 and a speculative survey licence cannot authorise drilling beyond a depth of 300 meters.
It should be noted, that where a speculative survey licence is granted or renewed over the area, or part of the area, of an existing licence, the applicant for the licence must: Consult with the existing licensee and seek to reach agreement on the activities to be carried out under the speculative survey licence on the area that is to be subject to both licences; and, inform the Minister of the result of the consultation.
