Boat Code Agent or Examiner Approval - South Australia

Description

You will need approval if you intend to operate as a boat code examiner and / or a boat code agent. Boat code examiners are employees of a boat code agent who affix Hull Identification Numbers (HIN) to vessels.

Boat code agents:

  • examine vessels for signs that they have been stolen and re-birthed
  • issue and / or verify Hull Identification Numbers (HIN)
  • verify vessel details and provide a written certificate to DIT for recording on a database.

A boat code agent may fix HIN plates personally to a vessel, or employ approved boat code examiners to affix HIN plates.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

If applying as a boat code agent, the boat agent's body corporate needs to:

  • be associated with the marine industry
  • be open to the public at least 5 and a half days a week
  • have the necessary tools and equipment (for example, punches and engravers, for affixing a hull identification number (HIN))
  • have access to an area suitable for a boat trailer while affixing HINs.

If applying as a boat code examiner you will need to:

  • be an employee of a boat code agent
  • provide the boat code agent id
  • provide the boat code examiner number
  • have at least 3 years of experience as an approved marine mechanic working as shipwright or boat builder.
