Admission to the Legal Profession in Tasmania - Tasmania


You are required to apply to be able to practice law in Tasmania. Admission to the legal profession will allow you to work as any of the following:

  • lawyer
  • legal practitioner
  • barrister
  • solicitor.

It is required that a person intending to practice law will:

  • obtain the necessary academic qualifications
  • be admitted to practice law in Australia
  • abide by any rules applicable under the Act
  • hold a current Australian practising certificate.

All new local legal practitioners must engage in supervised legal practice for a prescribed period of time.

Please note that separate application requirements apply to local applicants, interstate practitioners, New Zealand practitioners, and practitioners from overseas. If you intend to practice law as a corporation, you must apply for a notice of intention to provide legal services.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for admission, you must:

  • be at least 18 years or over
  • be a fit and proper person
  • have passed the examinations required by an approved university or institution for the degree of Bachelor of Laws or a combined degree consisting of the degree of Bachelor of Laws and another degree
  • pass any specified subjects in those examinations
  • complete, to the satisfaction of the Board, an approved course of practical instruction on the duties of a legal practitioner.
