Animal Research Licence - Tasmania


You will need this licence if you intend to conduct animal research activities. This includes any procedure, test, experiment, inquiry or study in which an animal is subjected to procedures or treatments that are likely to have a significant, adverse effect on the welfare of the animal.

Any entity that intends to conduct research or teaching, such as a school, university, company or private individual, may apply for an animal research licence.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an animal research licence, you must:

  • have an Animal Experimentation Ethics Committee (AEC) or access to an AEC via a formal written sharing agreement with another licensed institution
  • agree to conditions in the licence and the approved code of practice
  • lodge a written application detailing the general nature of research to be undertaken.

There are also additional requirements if you intend to use Tasmanian wildlife (including fish) for animal research purposes.
