Permit to Deal with a GMO in a GMO-Free Area - Tasmania

Description

You will need a permit if you intend to deal with genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Tasmania. The State of Tasmania has been declared a genetically modified (GMO) free area, and a moratorium on the use of GMOs in Tasmania is in place until November 2029.

GMOs are organisms that have been modified by using gene technology to produce certain desirable characteristics. Gene technology involves the modification of organisms by the direct incorporation (or deletion) of one or more genes to introduce or alter characteristics of organisms.

Many factors will be taken into account when considering this approval and if granted will be subject to any conditions the Agency considers necessary.

Please note that in almost all cases you must also hold a GMO licence under the Gene Technology Act 2000 in order to deal with a GMO in Tasmania.
