Construction work can be any commercial, civil or housing construction work carried out in connection with the construction, alteration, conversion, fitting-out, commissioning, renovation, repair, maintenance, refurbishment, demolition, decommissioning or dismantling of a structure.
This code of practice is a compliance code. Compliance codes are made to provide practical guidance to persons who have occupational health and safety duties or obligations. Compliance with this code of practice is not mandatory. Failure to comply with a compliance code does not give rise to civil or criminal liability. However, meeting the requirements of a compliance code means that you have fulfilled your occupational health and safety duties and obligations.
The code provides guidance to principal contractors and other persons conducting a business or undertaking who carry out construction work on how to meet the health and safety requirements. The information and guidance contained in this code is relevant to all types of construction work and includes specific guidance for business working within the housing construction sector.
This code should be read in conjunction with other codes of practice relating to specific hazards and control measures relevant to the construction industry.
