Description

You will need this licence if you intend to generate, transmit or distribute electricity in Tasmania or retail electricity on the Bass Strait Islands.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To grant the licence, the regulator must be satisfied that the applicant:

  • is a suitable person to hold the licence
  • will generate the appropriate quality of electricity and have the necessary capacity for transmitting or distributing electricity, or whichever is relevant to the application
  • meets any specially imposed or otherwise prescribed requirements.

Duration

Licences are granted for a term up to 10 years and may be renewable.

Application process

Apply

To obtain your licence you must:

  • submit the completed application form and specified information
  • identify the applicant's officers and major shareholders
  • if generating electricity, contain details of the generating plant, identify the transmission system or distribution network to which the plant will connect to
  • if transmitting electricity, details of the transmitting system and any proposed connections
  • if distributing electricity, details of the distribution network and the area that it covers
  • if retailing electricity in the Bass Strait Islands, details of the business
  • pay the required fee.
