Fireworks Display Permit - Tasmania

Description

You must obtain a permit to hold a fireworks display. There are three types of permit:

  • 'Type 2' Cracker Night permit - to celebrate Commonwealth Day on May 25 each year (where on a Saturday, otherwise the following Saturday)
  • Pyrotechnician Permit - for outdoor fireworks displays
  • Theatrical Permit - for indoor fireworks displays.

Licence

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for any fireworks display permit, you must:

  • complete an application and attached any required documentation
  • nominate a pyrotechnician if you intend to hold a fireworks display on any day other than Cracker Night
  • comply with separation distances and environmental harm requirements
  • be a fit and proper person aged 18 years or over
  • pay the prescribed fees.

If you are a body corporate, you may need to nominate a responsible adult and an alternative responsible adult.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

Once you have obtained the permit, you will have to comply with the set conditions, which may include the time, date and duration of the fireworks display.

Expiry

The permit expires immediately following the fireworks display.

Approval time

An application must be lodged at least 21 days before the proposed display date.

Transfer

A fireworks display permit is not transferable or renewable.

Additional information

Anyone 18 years or older can apply for a 'Type 2' Cracker Night permit. Other firework displays must be conducted by a pyrotechnician (person who holds a shot-firing permit with a pyrotechnics endorsement).
