Forest Practices Officer Accreditation - Tasmania

Description

You will need this accreditation if you intend to provide services and advice as a Forest Practices Officer (FPO).

The functions of FPOs are to:

  • ensure that forest practices are carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Act, the Code and any certified Forest Practices Plan
  • ensure that private timber reserves are being used for establishing forests, or growing or harvesting timber
  • perform any functions determined by the Forest Practices Authority according to the Instrument of Appointment
  • follow any instructions issued by the Chief Forest Practices Officer (this is generally included on the Instrument of Appointment).

There are two types of FPO appointment:

  • inspecting
  • planning.

FPOs are expected to undertake their FPO duties at the same time as they are undertaking their normal duties for their employer or client.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for appointment as an FPO you must:

  • be a fit and proper person
  • have a tertiary qualification in forestry or suitable technical qualifications or demonstrated equivalent expertise
  • have completed appropriate FPO training and have satisfied the FPA that you are suitable for appointment
  • for FPO (Planning), have at least 5 years of practical field forestry experience in planning and supervising the conduct of forestry operations. An FPO (Planning) must demonstrate active involvement in planning forest operations including the involvement in establishing at least 2 Forest Practices Plans per calendar year
  • for FPO (Inspecting) - at least 5 years of practical field forestry experience in supervision of forestry operations.

Persons appointed as an FPO are required to perform such functions as may be specified in the instrument of their appointment and other functions as the Authority may determine.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

FPOs must attend the biennial refresher course to keep their accreditation.
