Herpetofauna Permit - Tasmania

Description

You will need authorisation if you intend to collect and keep Tasmanian native reptiles and amphibians. This will permit you to collect or keep a maximum of six adult specimens of allowed species.

Allowed species include particular reptiles and amphibians specified by the Agency. For example, these species include:

  • southern snow skinks
  • copperhead snakes
  • Tasmanian tree frogs.

A full list of species that a herpetology permit authorises the collection and keeping of can be found on the attached resource. Authorisation is issued in the following herpetology permit forms:

  • Special Purposes Wildlife Permit for Herpetofauna - authorises the collection and keeping of allowed species
  • Keep and Display Herpetofauna for a Business - authorises a business to keep and display Tasmanian herpetofauna for the purpose of educational display
  • Herpetofauna Educational Facility Permit - authorises an organisation to keep and display allowed species for the purpose of educational or scientific display.

Eligibility requirements

Permits will only be issued to applicants who agree to comply with the Code of Practice. This code enforces obligations on the following actions in relation to species protected by Herpetology Permits:

  • collection
  • transport
  • release and disposal
  • management in captivity
  • recording.

Collection and keeping of some species may also be subject to Scientific Permits.
