You will need this permit if you intend to sell alcohol from premises that is not otherwise licensed to sell alcohol. The permit is issued to the person who applies on behalf of an association, society, organisation, club or other bona fide body running the event or function. If alcohol is being provided by way of an entry fee into a function, a cost per glass or pre-sold tickets, then it is considered that alcohol is being sold and a special permit will need to be obtained.
There are four types of special permit, and they may be issued based on the amount of time a permit is needed:
- up to four days
- four to thirty days
- six months
- twelve months.
The agency may grant a permit if satisfied that the principal purpose of the function is not the sale or consumption of alcohol and that this is incidental to the event, and if satisfied that it is reasonable to grant the permit.
If you are planning to allow patrons to BYO (bring their own) alcohol, please consult your local council for compliance issues.
