Marine Farming Lease - Tasmania

Description

You will need to hold a marine farm lease If you intend to operate a marine farm in State waters. Leases may be granted within marine farming zones described in Marine Farming Development Plans.

State waters include:

  • any waters within the territorial sea of Australia
  • any marine or tidal waters adjacent to Tasmania (except inland waters)
  • any land which is swept by State waters to the highest landward extent
  • waters that relate to a marine farming lease.

Generally, leases may be allocated through a tender process at the time that a new Marine Farming Development Plan is established or can be purchased from an existing lease holder.

Eligibility requirements

Marine farming operations can only take place in marine farming lease areas or authorised land-based facilities.

All marine farming operations must be licensed. All non-finfish farming licences include environmental conditions to ensure that marine farming operations are sustainable and do not have an unacceptable impact on the marine environment.
