Marine Pilot Licence - Tasmania

Description

If you intend to provide the services of a licensed marine pilot for the port operator (TasPorts) you will require this licence. A marine pilot is required to pilot commercial and recreational vessels over 35 metres in length within a Tasmanian pilotage area unless the master or vessel pilot holds an exemption.

There are two licences that form the marine pilots licence, the restricted and the unrestricted. Please refer to the marine pilotage code for more information.

Licence

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • hold a valid and approved current certificate of competency, or have other approved experience and qualifications determined equivalent by the authority
  • hold an authorised pilot's licence or show proof of an approved form of service as a first mate in the previous year
  • demonstrate an ability to speak English to a standard that would allow you to safely discharge the duties and responsibilities of a pilot
  • submit an application on an approved form
  • pay any prescribed fees
  • accompany your application with any other documentation as requested, such as a medical certificate.

Before an application for a pilot's licence is granted you must undertake any voyages and training and pass any examinations required by the Agency and relevant port authorities. Duration

Licence is valid for 12 months. Renewal available every year following.
