Marine Pilot Licence - Tasmania


You will need this licence to provide the services of a licensed marine pilot for the Tasmanian port operator (TasPorts). A marine pilot is needed to pilot commercial and recreational vessels over 35 metres in length within a Tasmanian pilotage area, unless the master or vessel pilot holds an exemption.

There are two types of licence, restricted and unrestricted. Please refer to the marine pilotage code for more information.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence, you must:

  • hold a valid certificate of competency as an Australian Master Unlimited issued by the Australian Marine Safety Authority, or have other approved experience and qualifications determined equivalent by the authority
  • have served for at least 12 months as Master or Second in Command on an appropriately sized vessel in the last 5 years, or hold an authorised pilot's licence issued by an approved organisation and have been actively engaged in piloting within the last 12 months
  • hold a valid certificate of medical and mental fitness
  • demonstrate an ability to speak English to a standard that would allow you to safely discharge the duties and responsibilities of a pilot.

Before an application for a pilot's licence is granted, you must undertake any voyages and training and pass any examinations required by the agency and relevant port authorities.


Licence is valid for 12 months
