Marine Pilot Licence - Tasmania


You will require this licence if you intend to act as a ship's pilot for a vessel over 35 metres in length within a Tasmanian pilotage area unless you are the holder of a current Marine Pilotage Exemption Certificate. This licence applies for both commercial and recreational vessels.

You may also be eligible for an exemption if your vessel is considered low risk and is:

  • between 35 and 75 metres
  • not carrying more than 12 passengers
  • not a cargo carrying vessel
  • not engaged in towing operations
  • not a vessel that has a normal operating speed greater than 25 knots.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • hold a valid and approved current certificate of competency, or have other approved experience and qualifications determined equivalent by the authority
  • hold an authorised pilot's licence or show proof of an approved form of service as a first mate in the previous year
  • demonstrate an ability to speak English to a standard that would allow you to safely discharge the duties and responsibilities of a pilot
  • submit an application on an approved form
  • pay any prescribed fees
  • accompany your application with any other documentation as requested, such as a medical certificate.

Before an application for a pilot's licence is granted you must undertake any voyages and training and pass any examinations required by the Agency and relevant port authorities. Licence is valid for 12 months. Renewal available every year following.
