Permit to Acquire a Firearm - Tasmania

Description

You will need this permit if you intend to acquire a firearm. There are five categories of firearm:

  • Category A - firearms such as air rifles, rimfire rifles (other than self loading), shotguns (other than pump action or self loading) or shotgun and rimfire combinations.
  • Category B - firearms such as muzzle loading firearms, centrefire rifles (other than self loading) or shotgun and centrefire rifle combinations.
  • Category C - firearms such as self loading rimfire rifles (with a magazine capacity of no more than 10 rounds), self loading shotguns (with a magazine capacity of no more than 5 rounds) or pump action shotguns (with a magazine capacity of no more than 5 rounds).
  • Category D - firearms such as self loading centrefire rifles, self loading shotguns (with a capacity of more than 5 rounds), pump action shotguns (with a capacity of more than 5 rounds), and self loading rimfire rifles (with a magazine capacity of more than 10 rounds).
  • Category H - firearms such as pistols or air pistols.

If you are the holder of a category H firearms licence for sport or target shooting, you may apply for a permit to acquire a prohibited pistol for the purpose of participating in a prescribed event.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this permit you must:

  • be a fit and proper person
  • have a sufficient reason and need to acquire the firearm
  • hold a firearms licence of the category that is appropriate to the firearm that you intend to acquire
  • be able to meet the storage and safety requirements.

It is a condition of this permit that you are familiar, and willing to comply with, all relevant and current state and commonwealth legislation.

Duration

A permit is in force for 90 days from the date it is granted or until the date the firearm is acquired.
