Permit to Establish an Outdoor Dining Facility - Hobart City Council - Tasmania


You will need this permit if you intend to operate a food or beverage business and propose to place, erect or construct furniture or goods outside your premises on a footpath, road or reserve or any other public place to encourage outdoor street dining.

Furniture includes but is not limited to:

  • tables
  • chairs
  • umbrellas
  • screens
  • portable heaters
  • awnings
  • lighting
  • planter boxes.

Your local Council may have dimension requirements that must be maintained for pedestrian movement along the footpath.

Eligibility requirements

Occupation licences may be issued to restaurant owners and operators to facilitate the placement of tables, chairs, umbrellas and other furniture used for outdoor dining. There are certain minimum dimensions that must be maintained for pedestrian movement along a footpath.
