Pilotage Exemption Certificate - Tasmania

Description

You will require this certificate if you want to pilot your own vessel into a harbour that usually requires the services of a marine pilot to do so.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this certificate, you must:

  • hold a certificate of competency as an Australian Master Class 1 or an equivalent certificate or experience and qualification approved by the Authority
  • have served aboard a vessel with no less than one first mate, navigating the area to which the exemption applies for no less than 12 months immediately prior to application
  • produce a medical certificate that meets the specified requirements
  • pass any training or examinations required by the Authority.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

You will need to have piloted a vessel into the harbour within last 6 months to maintain the exemption. If you haven't, you will need to undergo assessment.

Additional information

If your vessel is considered low risk then you may apply for an low risk vessel pilot exemption. A low risk vessel is:

  •     between 35 and 75 metres
  •     not carrying more than 12 passengers
  •     not a cargo carrying vessel
  •     not engaged in towing operations
  •     not a vessel that has a normal operating speed greater than 25 knots.
