You will need to be registered as a teacher to teach in a school or college. There are two main registration types:
- Registration for the school sector - Full and provisional registration together comprise one category of registration for the school sector. These types of registration recognise the qualifications, teaching experience, and competencies of teachers who are trained to teach students from kindergarten through to the final year of college.
- Registration for the Vocational Education and Training sector - Teachers employed in schools and colleges to deliver vocational education and training (VET) programs, including foundation or prerequisite courses for vocational pathways, may hold Specialist Vocational Education and Training Registration (SpVET). This type of registration recognises the qualifications, teaching experience, and competencies of teachers working in the VET sector.
Dual Registration recognises teachers with broad qualifications suitable for both the school and the VET sectors. Therefore some Tasmanian teachers hold SpVET registration and Provisional Registration, or SpVET Registration and Full Registration.
