Security Agent Licence - Tasmania

Description

You will need this licence if you intend to run a business providing security or investigation services. Security and investigation services include those of:

  • crowd controllers - undertaking crowd control activities including screening entry into premises, monitoring and controlling behaviour of people within premises or removing persons from premises
  • security guards - undertaking security guard activities including patrolling, protecting, watching and guarding property, screening persons leaving property, acting as a bodyguard and providing related training
  • commercial employees - undertaking debt collection activities including ascertaining the whereabouts of, or repossessing goods and chattels that are security interests, collecting and requesting payment of debts, executing legal process for enforcements of judgements and court orders and levying distress
  • inquiry agents - finding information about other people in relation to their personal character, occupation, collecting evidence and when searching for missing persons.

Licence holders may also apply for additional endorsement to use a guard dog, carry a firearm, baton, or handcuffs.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for the individual licence, you must:

  • be at least 18 years old
  • be a fit and proper person
  • not be a bankrupt
  • have set up a trust account for the deposit of money received from your clients (commercial agents only)
  • have the relevant training (these will depend on the category of licence you are applying for).

To be eligible for the body corporate licence, each of your directors must meet the requirements listed above. A body corporate needs to:

  • appoint a nominated manager who holds a Tasmanian Agent -  Individual licence with the equivalent licensed activities that the company needs
  • ensure each company manager or director undertaking licensed activities meets the criteria. This does not mean each company director should be a licensed person, however each person listed as a director will be assessed as if they are applying for a licence.

If you hold a current equivalent licence in another state or territory you may be eligible to apply for this licence under mutual recognition arrangements.
