Security Industry - Employee Licence - Tasmania


You will require this licence if you intend to be employed in the security industry. This licence allows you to be employed by a security agent as a:

  • security general guard
  • security guard with a dog
  • security guard with a firearm
  • monitoring room operator
  • body guard
  • crowd control
  • commercial sub-agent.

Please note that this licence does not allow you to run your own security business or hire other employees, you must be employed by a licensed security agent. If you intend to run a business you should instead apply for a Security Industry Agent Licence. You will not require a licence for serving writs, summons or other legal processes.

You may apply for this approval if you are currently not employed in the industry. If your application is approved, you will be issued a certificate which allows you to seek employment in Tasmania. This certificate cannot be used for Mutual Recognition purposes as you are not licensed, but approved to seek employment.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • have attained the age of 18 years
  • have a current First Aid Certificate (not required for commercial sub-agent)
  • agree to have your fingerprints taken
  • attach a bankruptcy report (commercial sub agents only)
  • be considered a fit and proper person to hold the licence by the Agency
  • consent to the Agency requesting a National Police check on your behalf
  • submit the required forms
  • pay any required fees.

Application process


You will need to lodge your application at a Service Tasmania outlet.

Lodgement process


If your licence was issued before you found employment, you will need to lodge a form to update the 'No Manager' status of your licence, before commencing employment in the industry. This is done by lodging an 'Application to Amend Registered Details' form.

You can apply to have your licence varied at any time. However, you must meet the relevant criteria current at the time of application. Changes of address must be notified within 14 days of moving.
