Well Driller's Licence - Tasmania


You will require this licence if you intend to personally undertake well works within Tasmania. This can include excavation undertaken to give access to groundwater, any other works undertaken to repair or modify the structure of a well or any works undertaken to plug, backfill, seal or decommission a well.

There are various classes (for example: single non-flowing aquifer systems, multiple on-flowing aquifer systems, and flowing aquifer systems) and endorsements available (for example: non-drilling rig, cable tool, auger, rotary air, and rotary mud).

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

In order to be eligible for this licence you must:

  • be an individual (companies are not able to hold this licence)
  • have completed the specified minimum amount of experience and / or possess the relevant qualifications
  • have successfully completed the national examination
  • successfully complete the state multiple choice examination
  • submit a complete application, accompanied by the relevant fees and supporting documentation.

Interstate applicants can use their current licence (held in another state or territory) as proof of knowledge, but will still be required to sit the state multiple choice examination.
