Approval of Adoption Agency - Victoria

Description

You will need this approval to arrange adoptions or conduct negotiations relating to the adoption of children.

Only a non-profit welfare organisation may apply for approval as an adoption agency. A welfare organisation is an organisation that is formed for religious, charitable or welfare purposes, not for the purpose of trading or profit.

An approved adoption agency is authorised to organise adoption arrangements for Australian children only. Special approval is required to arrange international adoptions. International adoption is regulated by the Hague Convention.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this approval, you must:

  • be a non-profit welfare organisation
  • have sufficient experience in the provision of child and family services
  • ensure you and your staff meet the requirements for qualifications, experience and character
  • have a thorough understanding of Australian adoption legislation and practices
  • satisfy any other requirements outlined in the authorising body's application procedure, such as security checks.

If you intend to arrange international adoptions, you will also need a thorough understanding of all applicable international adoption legislation and practices.
