You will require this licence if you intend to perform asbestos removal work. There are two types of asbestos removal licences:
- Class A: authorises the removal of friable and non-friable asbestos
- Class B: authorises the removal of only non-friable asbestos.
Friable asbestos can be crumbled, pulverised or reduced to powder. Non-friable asbestos is a compound of asbestos mixed with substances such as cement or other hard bonding materials.
Asbestos removal work within a negative air enclosure may only be carried out by the holder of a Class A licence.
Employees of an asbestos removal licence holder do not need to hold a licence provided they are working under the supervision of the licence holder.
Examples of items containing asbestos include asbestos cement sheeting, cement pipes, vinyl tiles, sprayed insulation, and asbestos-containing telecommunications pits and pipes, pipe lagging, millboard and gaskets.
Limited asbestos removal work may be carried out without a licence, providing strict occupational health and safety requirements are complied with. This applies to the removal of non-friable asbestos containing material:
- that does not exceed ten square metres in total
- involves a total time less than one hour in any seven day period.
Please consult the responsible agency for more information and to ascertain the level of compliance (if any) that may be required.
