Automated Driving Systems Permit - Victoria

Description

You will require this permit if you intend to drive any automated vehicle for the purpose of conducting an Automatic Driving System (ADS) trial on a highway. The ADS permit also authorises a holder of a full driver licence to act as a vehicle supervisor, and the participation of any automated vehicle to drive on a highway.

An ADS is any technology that is capable of performing the task of driving a motor vehicle.

The categories for vehicles for which an automated driving system may be equipped include:

  • motorcycles or motor trikes
  • cars
  • light rigid vehicles
  • medium rigid vehicles
  • heavy rigid vehicles
  • heavy combination vehicles
  • multi-combination vehicles.

Your permit may be subject to conditions which relate to the use of the vehicle, record keeping and reporting.

Eligibility requirements

To operate an automated vehicle in Victoria, you must:

  • hold a current full driver licence
  • meet Austroads fitness to drive requirements
  • obey all Victorian road rules
  • provide all required information and management plans
  • comply with any conditions imposed on their driver licence.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

The permit must be located within the automated vehicle, or in the possession of a vehicle supervisor in the vehicle, at all times while the vehicle is being used.
