Calcutta Sweepstakes Approval - Victoria

Description

You will require this approval from if intend to conduct a Calcutta sweepstakes. Calcutta sweepstakes are lotteries where the winner is determined by the outcome of a sporting contingency, such as a horse, harness or greyhound race (e.g. the Melbourne Cup) or AFL Brownlow Medal Count and usually involve the auctioning of drawn tickets.

Approval may be applied for by any club, society or other association.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this approval, you must:

  • complete the application form and lodge with the Agency
  • provide a copy of the club's current rules of constitution
  • pay the prescribed application fee.

Approval is at the responsible Minister's discretion. The following matters will be taken into account:

  • whether your club or association is conducted in good faith
  • whether your club has contravened any laws relating to gaming or betting
  • the type of sporting event.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

The approval is subject to the following conditions:

  • Calcutta sweepstakes may only be conducted with respect to sporting contingencies.
  • Subscriptions may be canvassed or made only on the club premises.
  • Participation is limited to club members and their guests.
  • No more than 5 percent of the profits may be kept by the club to cover expenses.
  • Calcutta sweepstakes may not be advertised except on the club premises or directly to club members.
  • Calcutta sweepstakes must be conducted in accordance with the regulations (if any).

Duration

Approvals are issued on a perpetual basis.
