You may be required to comply with this code if you house and care for mice, rats, guinea pigs and rabbits for the purpose of use in a laboratory. Compliance with this code provides evidence of meeting the legal obligations for operating an institution that breeds or uses mice, rats, guinea pigs or rabbits for scientific research, testing or teaching.
It establishes minimum standards which are enforceable and promotes recommendations for the housing and care of these species. This code is intended to be read in conjunction with the current Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes.
Compliance with this code of practice is not mandatory. However, by complying with this code you can demonstrate that you have met your legal obligations. Providing that you have complied with this code can be used as a defence against a charge cruelty or aggravated cruelty to animals.
Please consult the responsible agency for more information and to ascertain the level of compliance (if any) that may be required.
