You will be required to comply with this code if you intend to own or handle a horse that is competing in a bush race. This code outlines the minimum standards for the welfare of horses competing at meetings in Victoria. It specifies a range of minimum requirements including but not limited to, standards for veterinary supervision, riders, competing horses, course design, gear, injury management and race supervision.

 

Compliance with this code of practice is not mandatory. However, by complying with this code of practice you may be able to demonstrate that you have met your legal responsibilities. It may be a defence to a charge of animal cruelty that you have complied with this code of practice.
