Compliance Code: Confined Spaces - Victoria

You will require this code if your business undertakes work in confined spaces. Spaces are classified as confined spaces not only if they are a physically restrictive location, but also based on certain risks such as restricted entry or exit, hazardous atmospheres or risk of engulfment. Examples of confined spaces include pipes, ducts, chimneys, silos, wells, shafts and tunnels.

This code provides practical guidance on how workers can meet the requirements of the Act and Regulations. Its aim is to protect people against the risks associated with the entry, work space and exit from confined spaces. If your employees are required to carry out work in confined spaces, you should comply with this code, or an alternative code that meets the requirements of the act.

Meeting the requirements of a compliance code means that you have fulfilled your occupational health and safety duties and obligations in relation to the matters covered by the compliance code and may use this as a legal defence.

Please consult the responsible agency for more information and to work out the level of compliance (if any) that may be required by your business.
