You will need this licence to drive a vehicle transporting dangerous goods. This applies to transporting dangerous goods:
- in a receptacle (container) with a capacity of more than 500 litres
- in a receptacle where the dangerous goods weigh more than 500 kilograms
- in intermediate bulk containers (IBC) where the total capacity of IBCs containing dangerous goods on the vehicle is more than 3000 litres, or the IBC is packed or unpacked on the vehicle.
You will also need this licence to transport an empty receptacle, unless it is free of dangerous goods.
Dangerous goods include materials such as:
- flammable liquids (e.g. petrol, kerosene, turpentine, flammable paints)
- flammable solids and substances that are spontaneously combustible or dangerous when wet (e.g. sulphur)
- oxidising substances and organic peroxides (e.g. ammonium nitrate)
- corrosives (e.g. hydrochloric acid)
- flammable gases (e.g. LP Gas)
- non-flammable non-toxic gases (e.g. carbon dioxide).
Please note that the vehicle used to transport the dangerous goods in bulk must be licensed.
