Engineered Stone Licence - Victoria

Description

You will need this licence to operate a business that undertakes an engineered stone process.

An engineered stone process is a process involving engineered stone at a workplace that generates crystalline silica dust. This includes cutting, grinding or abrasive polishing of engineered stone. Without appropriate control measures in place, exposure to dust containing crystalline silica can lead to diseases like silicosis.

You will also need this licence to purchase engineered stone from a supplier or manufacturer if you intend to undertake an engineered stone process.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence, you must provide:

  • an engineered stone control plan and / or a crystalline silica hazard control statement
  • demonstrate the types of instruction, information and training you will provide to your employees
  • details of the types of respiratory protection you will provide
  • details of your business, including the number of employees who may be exposed to crystalline silica dust
  • details of suppliers and manufacturers you intend to source engineered stone from
  • any further required details about your business or business history
  • proof of identity.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

Employers are responsible for ensuring employees receive adequate information, instruction and training before they start work at a location where an engineered stone process occurs. This needs to cover:

  • the health risks caused by exposure to crystalline silica dust
  • the proper use of control measures as required by the crystalline silica regulations and how they are to be implemented (including the proper use and power tools and respiratory protective equipment).
