You will require this licence if you intend to operate a heavy accident tow truck in Victoria. A tow truck issued with a Heavy Tow Truck Licence can provide accident towing services to vehicles of a gross vehicle mass of 4 tonnes or more. This means that a heavy tow truck cannot tow a car, truck or other vehicle with a gross vehicle mass of less than 4 tonnes. A heavy accident towing licence also allows breakdown and trade towing of cars and trucks.
It is an offence for a person who does not hold a tow truck driver accreditation to drive a licensed tow truck or a tow truck that is being used for the purposes of providing accident towing services. Passengers must also be accredited.
A condition may be imposed to prohibit a tow truck from entering a specified area and being used to tow a damaged motor vehicle within that prohibited area.
